Marriage

I am sure everyone has heard of the big controversy about same sex marriages. Many people are against it, many people are for it, and I think even more people could care less about what the outcome of the argument is. I am in the couldn't care less faction. Most of the people that are against same sex marriage are against it for religious reasons and try to argue for their beliefs and not on the issue. This is why I believe that all those arguing against same sex marriage are going to end up on the losing end of this battle. You cannot try to win this battle by pressing you religious beliefs due to the separation of church and state crap. They can care less about your religious beliefs and the government will just ignore all arguments on the basis of religion. The irony is that the basis of marriage itself is bases on religion but they are choosing to ignore this all together.

Some people also are calling for the complete severance of the government and marriage. This is where I sit there thinking that those people are very short sighted. To start we will look at where the concept of marriage originated. I am going to start by looking at this biologically and making comparisons to other organisms on Earth. There are many organisms on earth that choose only one mate. They will form a partnership and be together until one or both mates die. However, you cannot compare humans to these creatures because we tend not to live in pairs. We tend to live in packs. Humans are very social creatures and choose to live with or around other humans. When looking at other pack animals, it can be said that very few practice monogamy. This would seem that I was using this example to argue against marriage but we must look at something else.

Humans seem to behave very differently when it comes to mating then most other organisms on this planet. Humans let culture dictate our practices. Our culture dictates whether polygamy or monogamy are practiced. Both seem to be very strong reproductive practices. Our culture is based on the foundation of monogamy and has been that way for many many years. It was so even before settlers first reached North America. The effect of having such a long standing practice is that much of our cultures is built on top of these practices. You pull one of these practices from the pyramid and much of the culture built on top will come tumbling down. Removing the legality of marriage will change more then you wish to change.

It will change much of the makeup of our government due to the loss of revenue gained from marriage. It will change many laws. It will even change basic family practices everywhere. Removing marriage from our system would cause a system shock that could start a chain reaction into things we wish to remain unchanged. The state needs marriage because much of its foundations are rooted in the concept of marriage and the money it brings. Many people need to start thinking about the changes they want to induce before they propose them. All it shows is that they don't look at the big picture and fail to grasp how important something that seems so little can be on the whole system.
